Workplace Policy Development
Educated Beards Inc. is a young start-up and still in its early HR development stages. They have completed an Employee Handbook but wish to develop more thorough workplace policies. They believe this would be an inefficient resource to offer new employees. This project should include the following policies: Anti-harassment and non-discrimination. These policies prohibit harassment and discrimination in the workplace. Non-discrimination laws are governed by federal, provincial, and local provisions, so reviewing applicable law for all appropriate protections will be necessary. Meal and break periods. A policy on meal and break periods informs employees of the frequency and duration of such breaks as well as any rules or restrictions related to break periods. Rest periods, lactation breaks, and meal periods must be provided in accordance with federal, provincial, and local laws. Timekeeping and pay. A timekeeping policy informs employees of the method for recording time worked and the importance of accurately recording their time. A policy on paydays lets employees know the frequency of paydays, the methods available for receiving pay, and any special procedures for when a payday falls on a holiday or when an employee is absent from work. Reducing new employee’s adjustment period. Safety and health. Safety policies describe safety and emergency procedures and require employees to report work-related injuries immediately. Additionally, some regulations under the Occupational Safety and Health Act require employers to have specific policies and programs in place if certain workplace hazards exist (such as a hazard communication program if certain chemicals are present in the workplace). Educated Beards Inc. is registered with and abides by all WorkSafeNB regulations. Employee conduct, attendance, and punctuality. Attendance policies make it clear that employees must be ready to work at their scheduled start time each day and provide procedures for informing the company of an unscheduled absence or late arrival. It is also a best practice to have policies on standards of conduct, drug and alcohol abuse, disciplinary action, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, and workplace violence. Equal Employment Opportunity. It is the purpose of this policy to effectuate these principles and mandates. Educated Beards Inc. prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type and affords equal employment opportunities to employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, pregnancy, age, national origin, disability status, genetic information, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Their goal is to have one document per policy, that coincides with their Employee Handbook which will be provided once an NDA is signed by all participants who will be working on this project. In teaming up with EB, you will not only gain experience in developing your HR skills but also learning what it's like to work with a Start-Up. We are looking for dynamic participants who enjoy challenges and thrive in being part of a creative and fun team.
